Plot
The story takes place five years after the first Dead Rising game. The main character, former motocross champion, Chuck Greene takes part in this competition/game show called Terror is Reality. The objective to the show was to kill gathered zombies for money and fame. When you first play your killing zombies while on a motorbike with chainsaws attached to it.The latest show was held in Fortune city. Fortune city is an amusement and entertainment resort somewhere in Nevada, and based off the casino strip in Las Vegas which was destroyed by a zombie outbreak 3 years ago. The host of the show is Tyrone King (called TK throughout the game after hearing his full name once) who will later be an Important character later in the story. Chuck participates in the show for the purpose of raising funds to buy Zombrex for his daughter, Katey, who was bitten by her zombified mother in the previous outbreak. Zombrex is a kind of medicine that prevents bitten people from turning into zombies.
After Chuck wins the prize money in the latest event, he retires to the backstage where he is trapped in an elevator after a mysterious explosion. Upon exiting the elevator, he finds that an outbreak has occurred in the city and many people are killed or changed into zombies. Finding Katey, Chuck takes his daughter to an emergency shelter where survivors have gathered. Chuck is blamed for the outbreak by a reporter, and must vindicate himself within 72 hours -- the time it takes for the military to arrive. With the show Terror is Reality show gone, Chuck must find other ways of obtaining Zombrex for Katey.
After Chuck does the show and collect his prize money from the latest event, he goes backstage to buy some Zombrex for his daughter. When he gets in the elevator, he gets trapped and becomes unconscious after a mysterious explosion. Upon exiting the elevator, he finds that an outbreak has occurred in Fortune city and most of the people are killed and changed into zombies. Finding Katey moments later, Chuck takes his daughter to an emergency shelter where survivors have gathered. Chuck is blamed for the outbreak by a reporter, and must vindicate himself within 72 hours before the military arrives and taken into custody. Chuck must find other ways of obtaining Zombrex for Katey as well. Overall the story is ok. I laugh at almost all the scenes because they tried to make it serious, but I have my Chuck Greene have the kill bill suit with blue hair and a ninja mouth bandanna. So I can't take it seriously. The upside is Chuck sounds almost exactly like Leon from the best game on the gamecube Resident Evil 4.
Gameplay
This game is so addicting and fun. This is a leveling type of game so the more zombies you kill and the more survivors you save the more experience you get and level up whether its learning new fighting moves, health increase, or more item capacity your going to need to be a high level just to kill early bosses. If you beat the game your level carries over to a new game if you want. Thank goodness the A.I of the survivors are much better and will not die on you and rarely will unlike the first game. There are 2 new things from this game. First is the fact that you can combine weapons/items. There are so many combinations that is really hard to do them all. To combine a chainsaw and a paddle to make a duel chainsaw staff is the best idea ever! You can even make a light saber by combining gems with a flashlight. With combinations like these, it is very hard to get bored by this game. The second thing is their is online Co-op. This was the best idea ever! I have a friend and we would talk about the first dead rising as we played it online, but now we can just play together which is awesome.
The learning curve for this game is just cruel. You have to be a high level just to kill the easy bosses and I think its impossible to kill some bosses without a friend helping you. Not to mention the zombies get harder as the timer gets closer to the 72th hour where the military arrive. The only other complaint I have is when you die. Its either load your last save or restart the campaign. If you miss a main objective that happens to but you can chose to continue, but you'll get the bad ending.
Final Verdict
I'm going to give this a 7 out of 10. For what it lacks in Story It makes up for it in gameplay.

OK, I get it: Zombies are great fun, and in gameplay you don't even have to figure a story line or level play that takes into account reincarnation or anything because you just don't kill Zombies easily. 7 out of 10; what, in your opinion, gets 10 out of 10? Or, what would this need to get 10? Better story? Easier gameplay (at least initially?)

ReplyDeleteWell essentially I would have gave a 10 out of 10 to Halo Reach, but if it weren't for those two things I pointed out that was lacking, it would have gotten a 10. Onthe other hand if I ever did a review for the first Halo I give that a 10 out of 10. I did forget to point out in Dead Rising 2 whenever you start a game or go into another part of the game (which is every like minute if you need to get to a destination) The loading time is unbelievably long. Even if you were to install the game to your hard drive (which I did) it still too long for a console game.
